This small study was just practice for a much larger version that I hope to paint in the near future. The reference photo for this painting was taken very near our home in Castle Rock, CO by Cynthia Preston and posted on the “Next Door” app in late June 2023. Our deck overlooks the front range with a very similar view, but regrettably, my photos couldn’t compete. However, with her permission, I used her photo for this painting. That evening produced one of the most remarkable lightening shows I’ve ever witnessed (and I’m 78). Cynthia captured this image from a video she took of much of the storm. It’s impossible to capture the constant variety and color changes in the clouds and on the landscape in one image, but it was fun to try!
